It seems 1.8.6 has a similar problem as [ruby-core:18444]. IMHO revision r23201 is worth backporting.

I get "Virtual timer expired" after this patch when using Rails. The "Phusion passenger guys":http://blog.phusion.nl/2009/05/20/ruby-enterprise-edition-186-20090520-released/ seem to have fixed the issue.
